Completely redesigned for 2007, the flagship LS sedan offers both standard and extended-wheelbase versions. (A hybrid version, the LS600h, is covered separately.)

Major features of the V-8 sedans include a standard eight-speed automatic transmission working with a standard 380-horsepower, 4.6-liter V-8 engine featuring direct injection and electric-motor-driven Variable Valve Timing (VVT-i). Electric power steering and a Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) stability system are standard.

VDIM integrates and manages a new Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system, electronic power steering, stability control, anti-lock braking, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and engine torque via the electronically controlled throttle. Monitoring a variety of sensors, the system anticipates the onset of a vehicle skid while cornering, and then helps correct the situation with a combination of braking, throttle, and steering control in a way that is essentially transparent to the driver. Stability control can also be turned off by the driver via the Trac Off button. In addition, the new LS comes standard with eight airbags -- with a maximum of eleven airbags available.

Long-wheelbase L models offer 4.8 inches of additional space over the regular wheelbase model and come standard with a navigation system with XM factory-installed satellite radio and real-time traffic, climate-controlled front seats, heated rear seats, a new heated steering wheel, power rear sunshade, a new one-touch open/close power trunk, power door closers, headlamp washers, and laminated side glass -- a feature exclusive to the long-wheelbase L model.

For 2008, the LS460 adds one new exterior color, Opaline Pearl. The long-wheelbase LS460L gets a new air suspension package with 19-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels, and adaptive steering. Prices start from $61,500 for the LS460 and from $71,500 on the LS460L

Why should I also consider these? X

The LS 460 is significantly cheaper than the 7-Series or S-Class.

All-wheel drive is available in the S-Class and comes standard in the A8 but is not available in either the 7-Series or LS 460.

The LS 460 has a straightforward instrument panel layout, without the use of a centralized, screen-driven interface like BMW's iDrive, which some drivers will appreciate.

Each of these competitors has distinct designs inside (and outside) that arguably feel more lavish than the LS 460's simpler, more conservative style.

Additionally, each rival offers high-performance variants, including the S8, the Alpina B7, and the S63 and S63 AMG, which the LS does not have.

And instead of a V-12 flagship, as these three European sedans have, the LS has a gasoline-electric flagship called the LS 600h L.
