WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Rumbling down the main street of my small hometown, I make a big splash. There’s no such thing as being incognito when you’re at the reins of an all-black machine with gray and orange pinstriping, bedecked head-to-toe with chrome detailing and propelled by 260 horses tuned to whinny like a hog.
Construction workers in hard hats, policemen directing traffic and even women in business suits turn their heads and take a long look. There are smiles and whistles. I feel like a pig in the mud and love it!
Two years ago, a dynamic duo of legendary American vehicle manufacturers teamed up to produce a tough truck with unique styling, attitude and punch. The result? The 2000-edition Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 SuperCab which sold out of its 8000-unit limited run quickly enough to signal to this pair of motormakers that they should keep up this newfound collaboration. Just around the corner is the 2001 edition, now in SuperCrew form, of which Ford plans to produce 10,000 copies.
In terms of a marketing strategy, it’s really a no-brainer. The F-150 has been America’s best-selling pickup truck for the last 22 years in a row; it is, in fact, the best-selling vehicle in automotive history. And Harley-Davidson has had similar success, as well, with eager customers placing down payments just to get on a waiting list for a future model. The marriage of these two legends- each of which will celebrate a century of motoring history in America in 2003- has produced an offspring that combines head-turning looks with "Ford-Tough" features..and has a great sound. No doubt many owners will pamper the SuperCrew just like their Superglide – for "long-term collectible investment purposes," of course.
