2006 Volvo v50 2.4i TOWING (or S40)?

Im looking for a car with good gas mileage that can occasionally tow my 17 foot boat (fiberglass, 4 cyl I/O motor)- cant be more than 2500 pounds, probably close to 2000. I have found a GREAT deal on a '06 V50 with 80k... Anybody have experience towing anything with this car? I know that its not AWD, slippery ramps could be a bit of an issue, but...

Towing capacity on a V50 is 2000 lbs, so it's probably not a good fit for you. Even if the boat is 2000 lbs, which would be your low estimate, you are pushing the limit. You also still have to figure in all the other stuff you pack in to it including yourself and passengers. An '06 S40...

Do I need to use official Volvo snow chains on my V50?

I only need them occasionally so do I spend $300 for a pair from Volvo or can I get a decent wire pair from the auto parts store?

No it is not a necessity. If your area requires the use of snow chains on top of snow tires then use which ever you prefer. Volvo will sell those items to make extra income. They do not have any properties which make them any better then a standard snow chain. Hope this helps.
