Start with the bolt on basics, but not neglect other things. If I was you I'd start with suspension/brakes/tires and then intakes/headers/exhausts and fuel related then keep going from there if your not happy enough.

My wife owns an 07 VW Beetle, it has the same chassis of the GTI. Fun car to drive. Never had problems with, very low maintenance. Oil Changes (Maintenance Schedules) are, first 5000 miles, second at 10,000 after that, every 10,000 miles intervals. Not too expensive to maintain. We have a grand kid...
