There's a lack of small sedans the Impreza's size that offer all-wheel drive.

The Dodge Caliber is perhaps the closest match; its sporty, top-of-the-line R/T model offers all-wheel drive, but its interior materials feel cheap, its engine is noisy, and it doesn't have the Subaru's refined ride.

The closest match to the Impreza's more mature and refined but sporty character is the Volkswagen Jetta; with its torquey standard five-cylinder engine, it also provides peppy acceleration, boasts more standard safety features than the 2008 Subaru Impreza, and has a spacious interior, though there's no all-wheel drive offered.

And for those who miss the former Impreza's edgier handling and sharper feel, the Mazda3 and Lancer deliver, but in both counts, engine and road noise can be quite obtrusive.
