There is a recall on the PCM flash that can affect this. I know it affects 02 Lancer. Call a dealer and see if it affects you. If so, rumour has it the emissions warranty of 80k miles is extended to 100k. If you're over 100k, you're on your own $-wise.

The Montero would be a better choice but there is a caveat to that. It will be very expensive to maintain specially with its age. Gas consumption will also be a little bit hurtful most specially if you'll end up working just for gas money. Forget the Neon! It is cheap for a reason. Consumer...
