The Malibus had a problem with the solenoid yhat is mounted to the shifter. As wonderful as GM is, you can't buy the part seperatly, you need to buy the entire shifter, unless you have an extended warranty-which may or may not cover it. Reference:GM Master Tech

2005 chevy malibu idles at 500 rpm?
I recently noticed that my 2005 chevy malibu idles at 500 rpm when I'm stopped in traffic or at a red light. It seems like if it drops any lower it will die. What can I check?

That's about right if you have an automatic transmission. Manuals should idle a little higher.
