I have 2005 bmw 745Li. After getting "front break pads worn out" message, I had front break pads and discs replaced by a private mechanic, but the warning message won't go away. When your mechanic did the brake job for you he neglected to replace the wear sensors. Once they trigger a brake wear message they need to be replaced along with the pads (and maybe the discs). For the front brakes it's BMW part number 34 35 6 778 037 (number 13 in this diagram)...
