Why is my 2002 Audi a8 making a strange whirring noise from the engine which go's up & down with the rev's

If I heard a whirring noise from my car's engine that did what you describe, the first things I would check would be external (from the engine) fittings containing bearings such as alternator, water pump, power steering pump, belt tensioners etc. etc. Hope this helps.
