The Mazda3 and Kia Forte are probably the most direct rivals for the Jetta.
Both the Mazda and Kia are redesigned for 2010, and they make the VW seem a little dated, but its ahead-of-its-time interior still stands up well today.
Also, the Mazda3 and the Forte aren't offered in wagon form, but the Mazda3 can be had as a five-door hatchback and the Forte is available in new Koup form.
The Mazda is definitely the best handler in the group, but the Kia stands out for having an especially nice, roomy interior and good fuel economy.
The Honda Civic Hybrid is a good alternative to the TDI version of the Jetta, achieving fuel economy that's better than the TDI in the city.
Another rival is the Impreza, which comes as a roomy sedan or hatchback, with a comfortable ride and good handling; all-wheel drive is standard on the Impreza.
The Ford Fusion (and Ford Fusion Hybrid) is a slight step up in size; it has a nicely creased style, available all-wheel drive, and a big V-6 engine, though its base four-cylinder engine is just fine.
