The Legacy sedan and wagon — including the SUV-flavored Outback version—are complemented for ’07 by the addition of the Legacy Spec B. This is a high-performance version of the Legacy sedan that can be viewed as mid-point between the flash and fury of the compact-sized Impreza-based WRX and the mid-size roominess and luxury of the regular Legacy sedan. The Spec B is built around a 243-horsepower version of the Subaru 2.5-liter horizontally opposed “boxer” four cylinder engine used in the WRX, teamed up with a modified version of the WRX’s six-speed manual gearbox and AWD system. The Spec B also features driver-adjustable SI-Drive, which allows engine performance characteristics to be toggled between three settings — “intelligent,” “sport,” and “sport sharp” — with the latter having the most aggressive throttle tip-in while “intelligent” dials it back for normal driving and up to a ten-percent boost in potential fuel economy. A limited-edition model in ’06, the Spec B becomes a regular production option for 2007. Cosmetic changes include new-for-2007 charcoal-gray leather upholstery with Dusk Blue Alcantara inserts. A high-end SRS WOW audio system with MP3 capability and Windows Media Audio playback and iPod jack has also been added to the mix.
