The Car Connection
Best Car to Buy
Brand-new for 2005, the midsize Montego sedan is Mercury's version of the Ford Five-Hundred. While the Montego shares that vehicle's platforms and powertrains, it offers slightly different styling cues. Its 200-horsepower 3.0-liter V-6 engine is on hand to drive either the front or all four wheels via either a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that is said to deliver manual-gearbox performance with the convenience of an automatic, or a conventional six-speed automatic gearbox. All-wheel-drive versions can automatically distribute as much as 100 percent traction to the rear wheels as conditions warrant, and are only available with the CVT. A fully independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, a stiff body structure, and standard 17-inch wheels and tires are said to contribute to the car's ride and handling qualities. A long list of standard features and include heated power mirrors, dual-zone electronic climate control, a six-way power driver's seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror, a CD stereo, and a tilt steering wheel with remote audio controls. Front-side airbags and Ford's Safety Canopy side-curtain airbag system are optional.
