GS300/430
Completely revamped for 2006, the GS line of mid-size sport sedans offer dramatic new exteriors that are the first examples of a "more passionate" styling direction that will be carried forth in subsequent Lexus models. Flowing lines with a long hood and short rear deck, and a futuristic-looking front-end treatment highlight the exterior, while a handsome new interior is trimmed in metal, wood, and leather. Several seldom-used switches reside behind a panel to the left side of the steering wheel to cut down on clutter. The car is also longer and wider than before, and rides on larger wheels and tires. Available with a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, the GS300 is powered by an all-new 3.0-liter, V-6 engine that generates a lively 245 horses. The GS430 is available only with rear-drive and comes powered by a 300-horsepower 4.3-liter V-8 engine. Both powerplants come mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission that includes a quick-to-react sequential-shift mode. The car's redesigned suspension delivers good road feel, ride comfort, and cornering abilities. Standard features include four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control with traction control, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and a driver's side knee airbag. The 430 offers an optional Pre-Collision System that anticipates when a crash is imminent and reacts accordingly, even applying the brakes more if the driver cannot react quickly enough. Noteworthy options include an available rear backup camera, adaptive headlamps, park assist, laser-guided cruise control, a Bluetooth wireless interface, and a top-notch Mark Levinson audio system. Lexus plans to offer a hybrid-powered version of the GS in early 2006.
