The '07 Grand
Cherokee picks up the Overland designation for its top model, with base
Laredo and Limited trim
levels also offered. The standard engine in the
Laredo remains the 3.7-liter, 230-horsepower
V-6 with the 4.7-liter V-8 and a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 optional. The 5.7-liter
engine features cylinder deactivation technology to boost fuel economy. The
high-performance SRT8 version that appeared last year carries over with its
fierce 6.1-liter version of the HEMI V-8 and 415 horses -- enough to propel the
SUV to 60 mph in around five seconds. Its chassis and four-wheel-drive systems
are upgraded to handle the added power and provide a firm handling, precise
ride. The SRT8 also gets specific 20-inch wheels and high-performance tires. All
engines come with five-speed automatic transmissions that include manual-shift
capability. Stability control and a choice of three full-time four-wheel-drive
systems are offered, including the top Quadra-Drive II system that employs
electronic limited-slip differentials for added off-road
capability.
