Uplander
The Uplander minivan shares platforms and powertrains with the Buick Terraza, Pontiac Montana SV-6, and Saturn Relay. Like those models, it achieves an SUV-like appearance by means of a slightly higher ride height and unique styling cues, though it retains sliding rear-side doors and offers three rows of seating for as many as seven passengers. Otherwise, it lacks in features and performance compared to the best in this class. A 3.5-liter V-6 engine produces a just-adequate 200 horsepower and is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission; both front- and all-wheel-drive versions are offered. A new 3.9-liter V-6 will become available later in the model year to provide a welcome shot of power. The 50/50-split rear seat folds into the floor, and the second-row seats are foldable and removable as needed to maximize cargo-carrying abilities. An optional roof-mounted DVD entertainment system incorporates a 20-gigabyte hard drive for media storage. Head curtain airbags for the first- and second-row outboard seating positions are newly available for 2006.
