The mid-size
front-drive
Malibu sedan and its
longer hatchback counterpart, the Malibu Maxx, are based on General Motors’
“Epsilon” global architecture, which also provides the basis for the sportier
Saab 9-3 and Pontiac G6. Updates for 2007 include standard head curtain and rear
side-impact airbags on LS and LT models, an available remote start system for LT
sedans (standard on the Maxx wagon) and a new 3.5-liter V-6 option with 217
horsepower (up from 200). Base LS and LT versions continue to be powered by a
145-horsepower, 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine. A new sport-oriented Malibu SS
sedan joins the lineup and is powered by a 3.9-liter V-6 with 240 horsepower and
a four-speed automatic transmission. SS models also get specific front and rear
fascias with blacked-out crosshatch grille pattern, platinum-look grille
surrounds, projector beam fog lamps, rear spoiler, dual chrome-tipped 3.5-inch
exhaust outlets, and 18-inch wheels. There are three new exterior color choices
for ’07 as well: Amber Bronze Metallic, Dark Gray Metallic, Golden Pewter
Metallic.
