Jaguar Land Rover is issuing a recall for the 2010-2015 Land Rover LR2 and the 2012-2013 Range Rover Evoque. According to Reuters, the recall stems from a problem with the SUVs' front passenger airbag system.
Documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that the underlying issue is a part failure on the vehicles' occupant classification system. That system determines whether a person is seated in the front passenger position and turns the airbags on and off accordingly. If the system fails, it could disable the passenger airbags, dramatically increasing the risk of injury if the SUV is involved in a collision. To date, however, no accidents or injuries have been linked to the problem.
The recall affects some 46,515 vehicles in North America, including 17,066 LR2 and 23,485 Range Rover Evoque units in the U.S. and another 5,964 vehicles registered in Canada. A company spokesperson couldn't say if LR2 and Evoque models in other countries would also be recalled.
Jaguar Land Rover says that it will begin notifying owners about the recall no later than August 30. Owners will be able to take their vehicles to a Land Rover dealer, who will update the software on the restraint control model, which will fix the problem.
