Car sales made big gains in July, with the Big Six brands leading the way. GM and Ford posted gains of about 10 percent, behind big sales of vehicles like the Camaro and F-150, while Chrysler was up 20 percent, and Nissan, 11 percent, with the Altima sedan still moving quickly off lots.
Chrysler has issued a recall for 2014 and 2015 models of the Fiat 500L. The recall stems from a problem with the 500L's knee airbags. Chrysler says that "routine testing...suggests the supplemental restraint – designed to protect a driver’s knees – may not deploy in the proper position if the driver is not wearing a seatbelt."

It's still a few months before the 2015 Ford Mustang starts to arrive at dealerships, yet a number of established aftermarket tuners are clearly hard at work prepping even hotter versions. The latest to tease a Mustang project is Roush Performance, which today posted the hazy profile pic above and added the name S550 in a tag.

Sales of plug-in electric cars in the U.S. continued their rise in July, as Nissan delivered more than 3,000 Leaf battery electric cars and Chevy more than 2,000 Volt range-extended electrics. It's was only the second time that the two cars together have sold more than 5,000 units in a single month; the first was last August, when 5,771 were delivered.
The new owners of the Fisker luxury car brand will resume production of the Karma range-extended electric sedan initially at a contractor's factory in Finland--but not until the company has fixed "about 250 bugs" in the vehicle.
Tesla Motors built 8,763 Model S electric cars and delivered 7,579 of them to customers during the second quarter, according to just-released second-quarter results. It expects to build about 9,000 cars this quarter, and deliver 7,800, largely due to a two-week production shutdown for retooling at its factory in Fremont, California--which cost it about 2,000 cars, it said.
