The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation of the 2008 Honda Accord. According to a bulletin from NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation, the agency has received more than two dozen complaints from consumers about the Accord's airbags deploying in non-crash situations.

One of those complaints, filed in November 2013, reports that a passenger stepped out of the vehicle and shut the car door, making the airbag deploy. Another noted that the airbags deployed overnight, while the vehicle was parked in the owner's garage. And yet another filed in October 2013 claims that his nine-year-old son missed two full days of school due to injuries he sustained when the airbags deployed after his mother got out of the passenger's side and shut the door.

To date, NHSTA has received a total of 28 complaints about the Accord's airbags spontaneously deploying, two of which resulted in injuries. The complaints seem mostly to involve the side-curtain and torso airbags.

NHTSA has now opened a Preliminary Evaluation of these complaints, which is the first step on the road to a full recall. During this phase, the agency will assess the complaints and, ideally, work with the automaker to determine if it's necessary to move on to step #2, the Engineering Analysis.

Should the probe move beyond that phase to become a formal recall, it's estimated that some 363,000 vehicles would be affected. Stay tuned.
