Hyundai is conducting a voluntary safety recall of certain 2013 model year Santa Fe Sport crossover SUVs to correct an issue that may cause front axle fracture and failure.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected by the recall at 20,300. Of that number, about 300 vehicles in Puerto Rico are affected, while the rest are in the United States.

The bulletin says that affected vehicles are 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUVs equipped with 2.4-liter engines and front-wheel drive. Vehicles were built from July 13, 2012 through March 12, 2013.

The problem

At problem, according to documentation from Hyundai (PDF) and the NHTSA, stems from a manufacturing issue that may result in the fracture of the right front axle shaft.

This condition may cause a loss of power to the wheels. Furthermore, if the vehicle is parked without the parking brake engaged, it could roll away. Both instances increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

The automaker said it has received 60 warranty claims and seven customer complaints related to the issue, but no reports of any accidents or injuries.

In the meantime, owners of 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUVs with any questions or concerns may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

Alternatively, owners of vehicles involved in the campaign may contact NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to http://www.safercar.gov.  Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 13V355000.
