Hyundai is recalling certain 2006-2011 Hyundai Azera and Sonata sedans in 20 cold-weather or “salt belt” states and the District of Columbia to address a potential corrosion issue.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected by the recall at 239,000.

According to the NHTSA bulletin, the recall involves 2006 through 2011 model year Hyundai Azera full-size sedans built from September 27, 2005 through November 22, 2010 and 2006 through 2010 model year Hyundai Sonata mid-size sedans built from March 1, 2005 through January 21, 2010.

The problem

Hyundai documents (PDF) and the NHTSA identify the problem as road salt and water entering portions of the rear crossmember, which may lead to corrosion of the crossmember steel. As a result, one of the rear control arms may detach from the vehicle.

A detached rear control arm, says NHTSA, “may suddenly change the rear wheel alignment, affecting the handling of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall follows an earlier NHTSA preliminary investigation (PE13007) of rear control arm failure after receiving six complaints alleging rear suspension control arm failures related to corrosion in 2006 Hyundai Sonata sedans.

The automaker said it had received eight warranty claims and seven customer complaints but is not aware of any accidents or injuries as a result of the rear crossmember corrosion issue.

What Hyundai will do

Hyundai will notify owners of affected vehicles and dealers will repair or replace the rear crossmember assembly. The service will be performed at no charge.

The Hyundai safety recall, identified as #113, is expected to begin at the end of September 2013. In the meantime, owners of 2006-2011 Hyundai Azera and 2006-2010 Hyundai Sonata sedans with any questions or concerns may contact Hyundai at 1-734-337-9499.

Alternatively, owners of vehicles involved in the campaign may contact NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to http://www.safercar.gov.  Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 13V354000.
