Chrysler is recalling certain 2014 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs to fix an electrical problem that may turn off parking lights.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected by the safety recall at 4,458.

The recall affects non-SRT trimmed 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs equipped with premium headlamps built from January 14, 2013 through March 20, 2013.

The problem

According to the NHTSA bulletin, electrical “spikes” may cause the parking lamps to turn off after the driver switches between daytime running lights and parking lights.

Non-functioning parking lights fail to conform to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, “Lamps, reflective devices and associated equipment.”

Parking lights that are non-functioning may reduce the vehicle’s visibility to others, increasing the risk of a crash.

Reuters reported that Chrysler is not aware of any customer complaints, accidents or injuries due to this condition.

What Chrysler will do

Chrysler will notify owners of vehicles involved in the safety recall and dealers will perform a software update to the Central Body Controller. The service will be performed at no charge.

The Chrysler safety recall, identified as No. N42, is expected to begin in August 2013. In the meantime, owners of 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs with any questions or concerns may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.

Alternatively, owners of vehicles involved in the campaign may contact NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to http://www.safercar.gov.  Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 13V289000.
