Chrysler is conducting a voluntary safety recall of certain 2010 through 2012 model year Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass crossovers to fix a potential airbag defect.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected by the recall at 254,396. Affected vehicles were built from May 6, 2008 through July 20, 2012.

The problem

According to Chrysler documentation (PDF) and the NHTSA bulletin, the problem is a software error that may result in delayed or non-deployment of the seatbelt pretensioner and/or side airbag curtains. Chrysler says this may occur in some vehicles of the recall population involved in certain “slower-developing rollover events.”

As a result, vehicle occupants have an increased risk of injury during a rollover crash necessitating airbag deployment.

The automaker said it is unaware of any accidents, injuries or fatalities related to this issue.

What Chrysler will do

Chrysler will notify owners of 2010 through 2013 model year Jeep Patriot and Compass SUVS. Dealers will correct the software at no charge.

The Chrysler safety recall campaign, identified as No. N01 is expected to begin in July 2013. In the meantime, owners of vehicles involved in the recall with any questions or concerns may contact Chrysler at 1-800=247-9753.

Alternatively, owners of vehicles involved in the campaign may contact NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to http://www.safercar.gov.  Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 13V233000.
