Toyota is conducting a voluntary safety recall of 2010 model year Toyota Prius and Lexus HS models for a brake defect.

As reported by our colleagues at Motor Authority, the recall affects all of the 2010 model year Lexus HS 250h and Toyota Prius hybrids in the U.S., totaling approximately 87,000 vehicles.

A notice on the Toyota website says that affected vehicles are equipped with a brake pressure accumulator “that may develop a fatigue crack on an internal part due to vibration.”

But, as noted by Motor Authority, the likely outcome is a loss of braking pressure, “although Toyota hasn’t mentioned what would happen if the part in question did develop a crack. “

The automaker said that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries due to the condition.

Toyota will notify owners of vehicles affected by the recall via first-class mail. Dealers will first inspect the brake booster pump assembly to see if it is equipped with “an involved” brake pressure accumulator. If it is so equipped, the dealer will replace the brake booster pump assembly with an “improved” one. The service will be performed at no charge.

In the meantime, owners of 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Lexus HS 250h vehicles with any questions or concerns may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or visit www.toyota.com/recall, and Lexus at 1-800-255-3987 or go to www.lexus.com/recall for further recall information.
