Honda is conducting a voluntary safety recall of a small number of 2012 model-year Civic compact cars to fix a problem with the steering column.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of Civics potentially affected at just 157. Affected vehicles were built over a five-day period between October 26 and October 30, 2012.

The problem

According to documentation (PDF) Honda sent to the NHTSA, the steering columns of certain 2012 Civics were assembled with a tilt bracket designed for use in the steering column assembly of 2013 model year Civic cars.

The automaker said that it “cannot assure proper performance of the energy absorbing characteristics of the steering column in a crash if the correct components have not been installed.”

The NHTSA bulletin warns that an incorrectly installed steering column increases the risk of injury during a vehicle crash.

In a statement posted to the automaker’s website, Honda said that the problem was discovered during routine factory quality checks and that no crashes or injuries have been reported as a result of this condition.

What Honda will do

Honda will notify owners of vehicles involved in the safety recall and dealers will inspect the steering columns and replace them as necessary. The service will be performed at no charge. The Honda safety recall campaign #S69 is expected to begin December 4, 2012.

In the meantime, owners of 2012 Honda Civic small cars with any questions or concerns may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009 and selection option 4. They can also go online to www.recalls.honda.com to determine if their vehicle requires inspection.

Alternatively, owners of vehicles involved in the campaign may contact NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to http://www.safercar.gov.  Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 12V548000.
