The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just named the all-new 2013 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover a Top Safety Pick.

An all-new model for 2013, the CX-5 won the top ratings across the board in the Institute’s safety evaluations, which include front, side, rollover and rear crash tests, and a “Good” rating in the roof strength test.

Dynamic Stability Control, Mazda’s term for electronic stability control (ESC), is standard equipment on the CX-5.  ESC was previously a requirement to earn IIHS Top Safety Pick status. As of September 1, 2011, ESC is required by federal regulation to be standard equipment on all new passenger vehicles.

The CX-5 is now the second Mazda model to qualify for the Top Safety Pick status since the Institute made the award criteria tougher in 2010 by adding more stringent roof strength test requirements. This test assesses a vehicle’s rollover protection. Making the announcement of the CX-5 crossover’s elevation to Top Safety Pick status, the IIHS remarked that “The roof of the CX-5 withstood a force equal to 5.47 times the vehicle’s weight.” Only vehicles that have a strength-to-weight ratio of 4 or better earn a good rating in the roof strength test.

In addition to ESC, other standard safety features in the 2013 Mazda CX-5 crossover include six airbags (front, side and full side-curtain); four-wheel disc brakes; antilock braking system (ABS); traction control system; fold-away brake pedal assembly; front and rear crumple zones; daytime running lights; three-point safety belts for all seating positions; seat belt pretensioners; Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH), and tire pressure monitoring system.
