2005-2006 Ford Taurus Investigated For Sudden Acceleration

Remember all those reports of sudden acceleration that plagued Toyota a couple of years back? Now the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is looking into a similar problem on the Ford Taurus and the Mercury Sable. 

In a letter to Ford Motor Company (PDF), the NHTSA reports 30 complaints involving 2005 and 2006 models of the Ford Taurus and the 2005 Mercury Sable. However, the investigation announcement from the NHTSA lists only the Taurus. 


According to a summary document posted at the agency's website, "Complaints allege engine speeds as high as approximately 4,000 RPM after shifting into Park or Neutral. Some complaints report that it was difficult to slow the vehicle with the service brakes during the incident...." In several instances, drivers claimed that they had to shift the vehicle into neutral or shut it off entirely, and at least one driver blew through a red light and into an intersection.

The investigation has just begun, so the NHTSA doesn't have any firm results just yet. However, inspectors believe that the problem could be related to a detached cruise control cable, which may be causing the throttle to stick.

According to the New York Times, complaints about the problem date back as far as 2010. Ford staff are cooperating with the investigation, which involves roughly 360,000 vehicles.

  1. I have an 04 FFV Taurus that does this. The problems started after I had the Ford Dealer adjust the engine controls so it ran better on E85. Intermittently, the engine will not return to idle while the car is moving, but will return to idle once the car has stopped. While moving the car will not coast. It will maintain speed or accelerate slightly. The higher the cars speed the higher the engine revs when I put it into neutral. I have never had difficulty controlling the car, but it has hurt my fuel efficiency and increased wear on my brakes.

  2. Sounds like a fairly similar problem. Next time you're at the garage, you might have your mechanic check that cruise control cable.

  3. Our family owned two 2006 Ford Tauruses one black and one green. In 2007 we started having the problem of the accelerator sticking in our green Taurus we took the car to a Ford dealership close to us and because they couldn't reproduce the sticking of the accelerator they calmed nothing was wrong charge us a fee and gave us back the car. It did it again two weeks later again we took it to the same dealership this time they replaced some speed control module. Well two Months later I'm at work my son calls me crying he has rolled this car; I asked what happened he said "the accelerator stuck" and when he tried steering towards the shoulder the car started flipping it rolled three times Right front to left rear.

  4. We were told by Lawyer because our son did not expire and was not critically injured in the accident there was nothing we could do in fact Ford didn't even offer to replace the car. We still have the other car to be just six years old it be coming a P.O.S. every day we drive it. It is eating up alternators and water pumps
