Need a car for a quick 10-minute trip or an hour to run an errand in another part of the city? Are you a visitor looking to sight-see for the day? If you are in Washington, D.C. or Portland, Oregon, you’re in luck later this month as car2go launches its popular carsharing service in those two urban areas.

More than 200 vehicles will be available in each of the two cities at the time of the official launch, March 24 in the nation’s capitol and March 31 in Portland.

But the deal gets even better. For a limited time, car2go will waive the one-time $35 registration fee to become a member and sweeten the offer with free 30 minutes of driving time.

Of course, you need to know that you’ll be renting a tiny smart fortwo vehicle, so don’t expect to be getting a large sedan, crossover or SUV for your carsharing experience.

Still, there’s a great deal of appeal to the idea of basically renting a vehicle that can transport you and one other person for any length of time you desire, anytime you want, and pick it up and drop it off anywhere within the car2go area. In this regard, car2go is great for urban travel.

For those who don’t know it, car2go North America, LLC, is a subsidiary of Daimler North America Corporation. The car2go carsharing service is currently available in Austin, Texas, the first car2go city in North America and the service’s North American headquarters and in San Diego, California, where the first all-electric carsharing service began in November 2011. We first covered the service coming to San Diego last July.

The value of the carsharing service is three-fold, according to Nicholas Cole, president and CEO of car2go North America, helping to “ease congestion, reduce emissions and provide a viable automobility solution that complements public transportation.”

Want more information on either of these two cities or to sign up for the service – and maybe snag the limited-time offer? Go to WashingtonDC.car2go.com or Portland.car2go.com. There’s information on the official launch event in both cities, as well as the promotional code to enter to obtain the free deals. Registration begins today, March 1.
