While the news may have gotten lost in the holiday lull, there are a total of 18 newly-announced winners of Top Safety Pick status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Our previous story covered the high number of family vehicles in the full list of 115 vehicles earning Top Safety Pick status for 2011. Here, we’ll list only those that have recently been added to the list.
Moderately-priced cars
Among moderately-priced cars, the IIHS lists four new recipients of Top Safety Pick status:
- Buick Verano
- Honda Accord
- Toyota Camry
- Toyota Prius v
Mid-size luxury, near luxury
Two new winners are listed here:
- Acura TL, built after September 2011
- Acura TSX sedan and hatchback.
SUVs
A total of five models receive Top Safety Pick status in various SUV categories:
- Honda CR-V – Small SUVs
- Honda Pilot – Mid-size SUVs
- Acura MDX – Mid-size luxury SUVs
- BMW X3 – Mid-size luxury SUVs
- Mercedes-Benz M Class – Mid-size luxury SUVs

Small cars
The list of small car recipients of Top Safety Pick status now totals 25 with the addition of these four new entries:
Minicars
Although they’re not family cars, per se, it’s still worth mentioning that the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris four-door hatchback are now afforded Top Safety Pick designation.
Large pickups
Finally, the Honda Ridgeline joins the ranks of large pickups the IIHS says are Top Safety Picks.
