2012 Chevrolet Sonic, New York City launch event, October 2011
Just a week after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) listed a recall for the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic over concerns about a missing front brake pad, the safety agency says the Sonic has earned a five-star overall safety rating.

The testing, under the revised New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), is based on frontal and side crash tests, in addition to rollover resistance testing. The NHTSA combines the three test scores mathematically to arrive at the overall vehicle score.
Achieving five stars in frontal and side crash tests and four stars in rollover testing, the overall score was still high enough to earn the Sonic the overall five-star safety rating.
The NHTSA applies the results to both the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic sedan and hatchback models because they have the same safety equipment and performance.
