Who doesn’t love a sneak peek at new production and concept vehicles prior to the start of a major auto show? In the case of the upcoming 2012 Detroit Auto Show, a number of automakers are fueling this anticipation by releasing glimpses of some family cars and SUVs they’ll showcase there.

It’s called marketing, advance hype, and the question is: Does it work? The answer probably depends on whether or not consumers are in the market for the particular brand or model in the segment. Even if they aren’t currently considering a new vehicle purchase, seeing what’s new may persuade them to check it out further.

In line with the pre-release trickle of images and scant product information, not much is known about the vehicles pictured here. That’s by design. Each company wants to maximize attendance and coverage of their products at the show and hopefully increase sales in the New Year.

Not only that, but the first major auto show of 2012 is a great way to get over the post-holiday blues. Here, then, are some teaser photos of three 2013 family vehicles, two compact sedans and one compact crossover, and one concept SUV making their debut in Detroit.

You’ll have to look hard and use your imagination to see much in the black silhouette teaser photo of the Nissan Pathfinder concept. Built on a new platform, with aerodynamic design, the four-wheel drive Pathfinder concept provides seven-passenger seating and ample cargo room and previews the next-generation production Pathfinder that will go on sale next fall.

Several photos of the all-new 2013 Buick Encore five-passenger compact crossover are being released on Buick’s Facebook page in advance of the show. As we reported earlier, the new small crossover bears some resemblance to its bigger sibling, the seven-passenger Enclave, particularly in the area of the blue-accented projector beam headlamps and other Buick styling cues.

Nearly a month ahead of the Detroit Auto Show, Dodge released four teaser photos (two shown here) of its all-new compact sedan, the 2013 Dodge Dart, a vehicle that just may be Chrysler’s most important car in decades.

Cadillac will take the wraps off its all-new compact luxury sedan, the 2013 Cadillac ATS, in just a couple of weeks, but along with the excitement about the car’s styling is the fact that it will offer an all-new 270-horsepower 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged Ecotec four-cylinder engine. Other engines in the ATS line will include a new 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V-6.
