With the record number of 115 vehicles winning 2012 Top Safety Pick status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), there’s good news for consumers and families looking for the safest vehicles to buy.
Among the list of winners, all but seven can arguably be classified as family vehicles. The four Top Safety Pick winners in the minicar category are much too small for family-car use, except, perhaps, as a second or third car, and the three winners in the large pickup truck category would similarly not generally be considered family vehicles. That leaves an impressive – and record – 108 vehicles that are.
Families come in all sizes, and require various types of vehicles to accommodate their everyday wants and needs, as well as lifestyle and recreational pursuits. In small cars, 25 are Top Safety Picks, including four new entries to the list this year: the Honda CR-Z, Honda Insight, Scion xD and the redesigned Subaru Impreza (except WRX).

For Honda, this marks the Accord’s return to the list for first time since 2009. As for the Toyota Camry, the first-ever Top Safety Pick award for the Camry is one that the Japanese automaker was eager to achieve, having a strong emphasis on safety in the vehicle’s redesign for 2012. The Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are two of the top-selling mid-size family sedans in the market. See reviews in TheCarConnection of the 2012 Honda Accord here and the 2012 Toyota Camry here.
Seventeen large cars receive Top Safety Pick awards, six in the large family cars category and 11 in large luxury cars. All are repeat winners from 2011.
