Chrysler is conducting a voluntary safety recall of certain 2012 Dodge Journey mid-size crossover vehicles that may have contaminated brake fluid.
A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists the number of potential affected units at 340, which also includes a small number of 2012 Fiat 500 vehicles. The Dodge Journey and Fiat 500 vehicles were built over a two-day period, from October 24 to October 26, 2011 at the Toluca, Mexico, assembly plant.
Documentation from Chrysler indicates that some vehicles were assembled with contaminated brake fluid and may experience degradation in the sealing components within the braking system, leading to a potential loss of braking.
Chrysler will notify owners of affected vehicles and dealers will replace all brake components that come in contact with hydraulic brake fluid at no charge to owners. Chrysler is expected to begin the safety recall campaign in December 2011.
In the meantime, owners of 2012 Dodge Journey (or 2012 Fiat 500) vehicles with any questions or concerns may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Reference the Chrysler safety recall number L39.
Alternatively, owners of vehicles involved in the campaign may contact the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to http://www.safercar.gov. Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 11V550000.
