It’s not just for young drivers, aka teens. The 2012 Kia Soul is also an excellent choice for small families looking for a fun, frugal means of transportation. Pluses include a commanding view of the road for the driver, while in the back row, the Soul’s tall doors make loading kids and car booster seats, backpacks and other family items a breeze. The bench seat fits three kids across or two adults. Fold the seats forward and the cargo space increases to 53 cubic feet. The hatchback opens to a low load floor, so it’s easy to get items in and out. With its six standard airbags, stability control and anti-lock brakes, plus optional rearview camera now available, the 2012 Kia Soul is also a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). Pricing begins at $13,900.

Combine good looks, spacious interior, seating for up to five adults, the latest infotainment technology, and a new four-cylinder engine option rated 30 mpg on the highway and you have a nifty vehicle sized right for small families in the guise of the 2012 Ford Edge. Head- and legroom in the back seat is copious, and fold down that backseat and the cargo area expands to more than 68 cubic feet. There’s even an optional power tailgate to make getting things in and out a lot easier. The Edge is another IIHS Top Safety Pick, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the small crossover an overall four-star rating. Besides standard curtain airbags and stability control, family buyers can opt for other safety features such as rear parking sensors, rearview camera, and blind spot monitors with cross-path pedestrian detection. Edge is available in four models, SE, SEL, Limited and Sport, with prices starting from $27,640 up to $36,975.
