In addition to its seven-passenger capability in three rows of seating, the 2012 Ford Explorer features quite a bit of configurable cargo space. That comes in handy for families with all kinds of lifestyle pursuits. Both the second- and third-row seats fold flat for up to 80.7 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold down the third-row seats and the Explorer provides 43.8 cubic feet of storage capacity behind the second-row seats. Carrying passengers in all three rows, there is 21.0 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. Store smaller items in a storage area located in the floor. Families who want and need storage on the fly can opt for the available PowerFold third-row 50/50 split-folding seat that folds flat at the touch of a button – conveniently located on the key fob, on the instrument panel, and on the bottom of the tailgate.

Aside from seating for up to eight passengers, the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse crossover, says Chevy, has the most cargo space in its class, 116.4 cubic feet of volume, as well as more cargo space than you’ll find in many full-size SUVs. But it’s the flexibility of the Traverse that may win it the most points with families. Available split-folding seats in the second and third rows allow for plenty of flexibility to adapt the Travers on the fly. There’s even more space behind the third row than any competitor, including the Ford Explorer, according to Chevy. And, about that third row, it easily accommodates, and is comfortable for, adults. Getting to it is a breeze, thanks to the Smart-Slide second row seat. A quick one-hand movement sets it in motion, sliding out of the way so passengers can exit or enter with ease. Ten to 12 cup holders make sipping hot or cold beverages on long-haul family trips a lot handier, too.

Another Chevy crossover, the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, provides extra storage capacity for families looking for a versatile but smaller crossover. There are a total of 18 storage areas and a deep center console sized just right for a laptop, iPad, or purse. Two small cargo area bins are easy to reach for both adults and children. The Multi-Flex sliding rear seat travels nearly eight inches forward and back, providing the most rear-seat legroom in the class, up to 39.9 inches. Sliding the seat forward adds valuable cargo space. Lifestyle pursuits take center stage with the available roof rack, all the better to accommodate equipment for biking, snowboarding, surfing to canoeing. Factory-installed side rails are standard on Equinox LT and LTZ, and available cross bows are dealer-installed on LT and standard on LTZ.
