Families with a need to carry seven passengers all at one time have several vehicle types to choose from:  SUVs, crossovers and minivans. But just because you need a vehicle that can carry seven doesn’t mean that you need to buy one that is extraordinarily expensive.

2012 Volvo XC90

Long-known for its excellent safety reputation, Volvo builds stylish vehicles with luxurious interiors – including the seven-passenger 2012 Volvo XC90 luxury crossover SUV. In addition to the luxurious and supportive seats, the XC90 features integrated child booster cushions, side impact protection system, dynamic stability and traction control, roll stability control, anti-skid system, and excellent safety ratings. Keep the kids entertained in the back with the dual-screen rear seat entertainment system. Available in two models, the 3.2 and R-Design, the 2012 Volvo XC90 begins at $38,400 and $41,200, respectively.

Competent, refined, and family-focused, the 2012 Toyota Highlander seven-passenger SUV is also affordable and offers good fuel economy. For 2012, the Highlander is available in five models: Highlander, SE, Limited, Hybrid and Hybrid Limited. Base engine is a 2.7-liter in-line four-cylinder and EPA-rated fuel economy is 20 mpg city/25 mpg highway. The Highlander can tow up to 3,500 pounds and the third-row seat is a 50-50 split bench. Base prices start at $28,090 (Highlander) up to $43,759 (Hybrid Limited).

The front-wheel drive 2012 Ford Flex mid-size crossover has seating for up to seven passengers in three rows, with the third row a 50/50 split bench in the SE trim. With an interior that many reviewers consider the most spacious of all the crossovers on the market, the Flex also boasts a high-quality cabin with easy-to-use features. Families love the large, multi-panel Vista Roof, turbocharged EcoBoost engine, Active Park Assist and refrigerated second-row console, although these will add to the bottom line. Powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, the Flex achieves an EPA-rated 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway fuel economy and can tow up to 4,500 pounds. Flex is available in four models: SE, SEL, Limited and Titanium. Starting prices begin at $29,355 (SE) up to $38,145 (Titanium).

Recently named a 2011 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2012 Dodge Durango mid-size SUV provides comfortable seating for seven in three rows (with the third row a 50-50 split-bench). Its structural twin, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, also earns Top Safety Pick status. In its base SXT two-wheel drive trim, the Durango is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 that has an EPA-rated 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway fuel economy. Properly equipped, the Durango can to up to 6,200 pounds. Pricing for the 2012 Dodge Durango begins at $28,995.

The only minivan with available all-wheel drive, the 2012 Toyota Sienna is both powerful and efficient, with its available V-6 engine, comfortable and roomy, and has flexibility in its DNA. The fuel-efficient 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine standard in the base Sienna model delivers EPA-rated 19 mpg city/24 mpg highway. With the 3.5-liter V-6, the numbers are 18/25 mpg. Removable second-row seats with tip-up and long-slide feature and the Toyota Star Safety System are standard. Move up to LE, SE, XLE and Limited models, and the standard features multiply accordingly. The base Sienna carries a starting price of $25,060, while the top-of-the-line Limited with all-wheel drive begins at $40,570.
