With an all-new design, new engine and transmission, it would be fair to expect that the 2012 Subaru Impreza compact would sport a price increase. So it’s a pleasant surprise that the automaker has kept the pricing the same as last year.

First, the goodies: The 2012 Impreza features a total redesign, a 148-horsepower 2.0-liter flat-four engine and a newly-designed continuously variable transmission (CVT) replacing the conventional automatic tranny in the 2011 model. All Subaru Impreza models have all-wheel drive. Projected EPA fuel economy is 28 mpg city/36 mpg highway.

Now, the pricing: Subaru’s base 2012 Impreza 2.0i with five-speed manual transmission starts off at $17,495, while the five-door hatchback model begins at $17,995. Opting for the CVT automatic transmission bumps the price up $1,000 to each model. Buyers can also choose upscale trims, including Premium, Sport Premium, and Limited. The destination charge on all models is $750 extra.

Look for the 2012 Subaru Impreza to be in dealerships by November.
