OnStar FMV
The OnStar suite of automotive safety and security services is now available for some 90 million older vehicles on the road in an out-of-the-box application called OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle).
The cost for OnStar FMV is $299.95, plus $75 installation. The product will be available July 24 at Best Buy stores nationwide, although consumers can pre-order OnStar FMV now. Monthly service plan rates for OnStar FMV start at $18.95, or $199 per year.
After OnStar made the announcement about OnStar FMV at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, thousands of people signed up to be notified when the product goes on sale.
The wait is over.
According to Linda Marshall, OnStar’s president, “Now, through Best Buy, they can enhance their Fords, Toyotas, Chryslers and other brands with the power of OnStar.”
What’s included with OnStar FMV
A natural question is what does the customer get with the purchase of OnStar FMV? The answer is OnStar’s technology packed into a rearview mirror and offering the same core features as the OnStar service that’s built into every new Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicle from General Motors.
This includes:
Installation on-site at more than 1,000 Best Buy auto bays nationwide makes getting OnStar FMV up and ready to go on older vehicles a snap.
Although Best Buy is the first to offer OnStar FMV, other retailers will soon offer the product. Look for availability at Fry’s Electronics, Al & Ed’s Autosound, Car Toys, Crutchfield, and P.C. Richard & Son in the near future.
Is your older vehicle compatible with OnStar FMV?
Find out if your vehicle can accommodate OnStar FMV through an online vehicle selector on the OnStar Web site. A random check of some make/model/year vehicles on the site finds the following are compatible: a 2004 Chrysler Town & Country minivan with 3.3-liter engine and standard audio system; 2001 Ford Explorer four-door SUV with 4.0-liter engine and standard audio system; 2003 Infiniti G35 four-door sedan; 2001 Subaru Forester four-door SUV with 2.5-liter engine and standard audio system, and 2002 Toyota Camry four-door sedan with 2.4-liter engine and standard six-speaker audio system. Note that vehicles built before 1981 are not compatible with OnStar FMV.
