There are at least two things on Planet Earth in need of serious makeovers: Volkswagen's New Beetle and pop star Britney Spears. We're happy to report that one of them has been re-envisioned for Britney's latest video.
Spears began shame spiraling out of control in the mid-2000s -- around the time of her highly publicized 55-hour marriage to Jason Alexander (not that one) -- and she's been picking up speed until, well, today, more or less.
Volkswagen's New Beetle has followed an eerily similar trajectory. The cute, compact model made a huge splash when it debuted in 1998 -- roughly the same time that another cute, compact model dropped her chart-topping single, "...Baby One More Time". At first, rabid demand for the New Beetle far outstripped supply. But over time, problems appeared: it began to look shoddy compared to its peers, and it had more than a handful of production issues to address. (Sound familiar?)
Yesterday, Spears released the video for her newest single, "I Wanna Go". Neither the "new" Britney nor the New Beetle featured in it have undergone extensive re-working -- just enough to seem refreshed. We'll let you be the judge of which looks best.
Side note: keep an eye open for actor (and occasional Dave Chapelle collaborator) Guillermo Diaz, plus Spears' backup dancer Adrien Galo. For those raised on Pop-Up Video, there's a rundown of the clip's many pop culture references here.
