Mazda has announced the recall of 103,300 model year 2008 and 2009 Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 models to remedy a potentially defective windshield wiper motor ground circuit. During assembly of the vehicle, the windshield wiper motor ground may have been creased or bent.
Over time, this can create additional electrical resistance on the motor circuit, eventually resulting in the loss of windshield wiper function. In adverse weather, loss of windshield wipers would impede visibility and increase the likelihood of an accident.
Dealers will install a secondary ground for the wiper motor to correct the problem. The recall is expected to begin on or around July 15, and owners will be notified by mail. Customers with questions or concerns can reach Mazda’s customer service hotline at (800) 222-5500, or they may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236.
