2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8

Earlier this week Chrysler announced the SRT division is now officially its own brand. The brand will be led by former Dodge chief Ralph Gilles.

Chrysler's Street Racing Technology (SRT) division started life as Team Viper. Originally formed to develop the Dodge Viper, the team merged with the Plymouth Prowler crew. The team went through two name changes before finally settling on SRT back in 2004.

Now that Chrysler has made SRT its own brand, we can only speculate as to what the future holds for it. Will it become a full-fledged model line of highly tuned Chrysler offerings? Will it finally receiving the marketing support it needs to thrive? Is it just an Italian-American way of saying AMG? Time will tell.

But is an SRT brand necessary? We want to hear what you think, should SRT be its own brand? Tweet us your answer and make sure to include the hashtag #SRTbrand-- and you'll join the chorus right here via CoverItLive.
