Hyundai Elantra

Redesigned for 2011, the Elantra, with its 40-mpg highway fuel economy, is styled right and offers plenty for consumers to like, starting at an affordable $15,915 (GLS). The Elantra is another IIHS Top Safety Pick, while the NHTSA's ratings aren't yet in. Hyundai sold 20,006 Elantras in May.

Honda Civic

Available as a coupe, sedan, hybrid, HF (41 mpg highway fuel economy) and GX natural gas vehicle (NGV), the versatile Honda Civic starts at $15,605 (base coupe). The 2011 and 2012 Honda Civic are IIHS Top Safety Picks, with the NHTSA's ratings for the 2012 model not yet in. Sales of the Civic slipped from its usual top perch, thanks to a model changeover and the March 11 disasters in Japan, but Honda still logged 18,341 Civics sold in May.
