Audi Ad Too Close To Chrysler's Super Bowl Eminem Epic?

It’s one thing to film an ad as an homage to another, but it’s something else entirely to copy a successful ad almost exactly. That’s what Eminem’s publisher, Eight Mile Style, is alleging that Audi did with the video spot for their new A6 Avant station wagon. The commercial starts out innocently enough, but when the backing track changes from classical to rock at 2:09 in, there’s no mistaking that the music was “heavily influenced” by Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.”

Even the visuals are disturbingly similar, with scenes of statues, movie marquees and deserted city street. Sure the Chrysler ad was filmed in Detroit while the Audi ad was filmed in Berlin, but there’s no denying that Audi incorporated more than a little of the Chrysler 200 ad into their promo for the new A6 Avant.

Eight Mile Style has filed for an injunction against Audi in Hamburg, Germany’s Regional Court. Audi has declined to comment, but who's betting their video won’t be up much longer? Watch the A6 Avant ad, and the Chrysler 200 ad it was influenced by, then decide for yourself.

  1. Some similarities, yes. There is NO brand identity confusion. The injunction against Audi was filed in Germany...do anyone really believ that will be upheld? How many Chryslers are sold anually in Germany? How would any court measure potential damages? If Audi is successfully accused of being a "copycat" this ad elevates Chrysler's image as a premium luxury car player. Chrysler should thank Audi, not slap an injunction.

    Bad stuff?

  2. It appears the Chrysler 200 blatantly copies the Audi styling. So, it seems relatively insignificant if the Audi ad resembles Chrysler's.

  3. Chrysler is not pursuing the injunction. Eminem is.
