Car shows are American as apple pie. These events are held in all corners of the country, in venues big and small.
What makes a car show moment memorable? Is it the special celebrity guest? The bag full of car-related merchandise? Or is it something simple?
The 2008 New Mexico International Auto Show set the stage for my most memorable car show moment. Upon arriving at my first “international” auto show in the region, I made my way around the show floor, past the domestic and imports. Tucked quietly in the corner, with little fanfare was the soon to be released Nissan GT-R! The silver “Godzilla” beast was sitting there, no chain link fences, no crazy displays to keep those interested away.
I could not believe that this car was actually here, in RHD form straight from Japan. No snooty corporate staffer telling me not to touch the car, no interference at all. I easily spent an hour reading over the brochure, dissecting the specifications and performance numbers. I felt like I was ten years old again, imagining driving this car on the world’s best racetracks.
This single moment sparked my interest in the performance car market again and I knew it would take years for the other manufacturer, both import and domestic, to catch up. The simple setup of the Nissan GT-R display was brilliant and was very effective in getting the attention of those attending this show.
It would be another year before I saw one of these cars again up close and I was just as excited as I was at this car show. Seeing the GT-R in person was well worth the entry fee and that day stands out as the most memorable show I had ever been to.
