Honda, Lexus Tops In Retained Value: New Edmunds Award

If you want to buy a vehicle that will hold its value over the next five years, a new award from Edmunds indicates that Honda and Lexus are the brands to consider. In its inaugural “Best Retained Value” award, says Honda took top place in non-luxury brand and Lexus won for luxury make. Each brand won four category first places as well.

The “Best Retained Value” is the highest projected residual value over five years, expressed as a percentage of Edmunds’ True Market Value (TMV).

As a non-luxury brand, Honda has projected retained value averaging 50.4 percent. Lexus has 48.1 percent average retained value as a luxury brand. Honorable mention goes to Toyota and Mazda in non-luxury brand and to Acura and Infiniti in luxury brand.


Honda Category Wins

Honda took four first-place category wins. In Sedan Under $20,000: 2011 Honda Civic (projected retained value of 51.9 percent); Sedan $20K-$30K: 2011 Honda Accord (48.2 percent retained value); SUV Under $25,000: 2011 Honda CR-V (54.4 percent), and Vans: 2011 Honda Odyssey (49.8 percent). Note that the Honda Civic tied for first-place in the Sedan Under $20,000 category with the 2011 Mazda MAZDA3 (51.9 percent projected retained value).

Lexus Category Wins

Like Honda, Lexus achieved four first-place category wins. In Sedan Over $40K: 2011 Lexus GS 350 (45.8 percent retained value); Convertible $35K-$45K: 2011 Lexus IS 250 C (48.9 percent); SUV $35K-$45K: 2011 Lexus RX 350 (49.6 percent), and SUV Over $45,000: 2011 Lexus GX 460 (47.8 percent).

Other Category Winners

Ford secured three first-place category wins with Ford Mustang, Shelby GT500 and F-350 Super Duty (Coupe $25K-$35K, Coupe Over $45,000, and Large Heavy Duty Truck, respectively).

Toyota took top spot in Hybrid, Compact Truck, and Large Light Duty Truck categories with the 2011 Toyota Prius, Tacoma, and Tundra, respectively.

MINI won in Coupe Under $25,000, Convertible Under $35,000, and Wagon $25K-$35K with the 2011 MINI Cooper, MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper Countryman, respectively.

Acura tied for top spot in Sedan $30K-$40K with the 2011 Acura TL and TSX.

Infiniti, Chevrolet, Jeep, Scion and Audi each won one category award as follows: 2011 Infiniti G Coupe (Coupe $35K-$45K); 2011 Chevrolet Corvette (Convertible Over $45,000); Jeep Wrangler (SUV $25K-$35K); 2011 Scion xB (Wagon Under $25,000), and 2011 Audi A4 (Wagon Over $35,000).
