Here's the first photo of the 2012 Subaru Impreza, just released in advance of the 2011 New York Auto Show.

The new Impreza has been shown in concept form at the Detroit and Los Angeles auto shows, and it's evident from the new photo that the crisp, emphatic grille and deep dams on the concept car have been toned down for production.

Subaru promises the new Impreza will earn up to 36 mpg in all-wheel-drive form, making it the most efficient AWD vehicle on the market. The Japanese automaker confirms the new compact car also will come in four- and five-door models, and says more interior room and more refinement are on the way, too.

    Sadly, from this one photo all I can offer are two words: anonymous and dull. Where is the flair? Or is that not part of their marketing strategy?
