See More Than One Prius? Call Them Prii

A bit of lighthearted news comes to us direct from the Chicago Auto Show, where Toyota made the announcement on February 21 of the official plural for Prius.

The decision is the result of more than 1.8 million votes cast by the general public during a six-week campaign. Toyota began the voting period during the Detroit Auto Show to help it determine the proper nomenclature for multiple models of its popular Prius hybrid and new-to-market derivatives and offspring.

How appropriate that the campaign kicked off just as Toyota showcased its Prius family that now includes the Prius Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (PHV), Prius v and Prius c concept.

So, Prii it is. Marking its entrance into the Toyota--and the world's--lexicon, says the word Prii will be reflected in the online dictionary.

This ends the confusion that has apparently existed for the past decade over what to call more than one Prius. And Prii beats out other plural suggestions such as Prius, Priuses, Prium and Prien. Toyota says Prii just narrowly beat out second-place Prius.

The people have spoken. Here at Family Car Guide we wonder how long it will take Prii to become the universally-used plural for Prius.
