Standard all-wheel drive in a car that carries a base starting price of $17,495 (four-door) and $17,995 (five-door) makes the 2011 Subaru Impreza a solid choice for an inexpensive and safe teen ride. The Impreza offers excellent handling and loads of standard safety features. It’s also another 2011 IIHS Top Safety Pick. Downside may be the fuel economy, less than other cars on the list at 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway. But the 170-horsepower 1.5-liter Subaru flat four-cylinder engine delivers plenty of pep.

For about $1,400 more than the Forte Five-Door hatchback, parents can opt for the all-new compact 2011 Kia Sportage for their teen’s ride. Starting price for the base front-wheel drive model is $18,295. Sportage may be the best value in the compact SUV class – and it’s a 2011 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Powered by the 176-horsepower 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder engine mated to six-speed manual transmission, the Sportage gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city/29 mpg highway. Stylish, with high-tech standard features, parents might be tempted to keep Sportage as a second family vehicle. With an overall 8.0 (out of 10) rating, The Car Connection editors clearly approve of Sportage.

For a safe and good-looking economy sedan, check out the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer. It’s no Mazda3 or Volkswagen Golf in terms of performance, and the Spartan interior doesn’t match the quality of the one in the Honda Fit, but the Mitsubishi Lancer offers striking exterior design, strong handling, crisp steering and comfortable seats. It’s also a safe vehicle choice for teens, with a 2011 IIHS Top Safety Pick designation. Base DE is powered by a 148-horsepower 2.0-liter in-line four-cylinder engine that gets EPA-estimated 24 mpg city/33 mpg highway (manual).
