Slogging through the slush and snow this winter is one thing if you’re outside with snowboots and the right outerwear. It’s another if you’re driving the family sedan and it’s not adequately equipped to deal with the snow, ice, sleet and dangerous driving conditions. In this second of Family Car Guide’s two-part series on best winter-weather sedans, we take a look at some 2011 models that provide sure-footed driving capabilities.

The only prerequisites to be included in this list are that the vehicle must be a sedan that carries the family, it must be a 2011 model, and it has to have all-wheel drive (AWD) as either standard or optional equipment (or a higher trim model). Here are a few of our favorites that qualify:

2011 Audi A8 Quattro

All-new and completely redesigned, the 2011 Audi A8 is the luxury automaker’s flagship sedan, also available in A8 L. Audi’s quattro permanent AWD adjusts power to the front and rear axles more than 100 times per second, helping to ensure torque gets delivered to the wheels where traction exists. Quattro constantly assesses grip, thus providing the best possible combination of traction and handling – no matter what the road conditions. Power comes from the 372-horsepower 4.2-liter FSI V-8 engine, transmitted by shift-by-wire eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Adaptive air suspension with four modes allows for comfortable and responsive ride in any road condition.

Other safety and technology features that make the 2011 Audi A8 superb for winter-weather driving include adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, electronic stability control, traction control, antilock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, side blind spot assist, night vision with pedestrian detection, 10 airbags, and Audi Pre-Sense integrated advanced safety systems (part of optional driver assist package). A8 also features adaptive headlights, headlight washers, heated front seats as standard. Heated rear seats and heated steering wheel are available as part of packages.

Be sure to check out The Car Connection's review of the 2011 Audi A8, where editors give it an overall rating of 8.3 (out of 10).

  1. Might as well thrown in the Lambo since it has AWD. An Mitsu Evo COMES WITH SUMMER ONLY TIRES! HOW IS THAT A "Family Winter Sedan"???
You think the Legacy or Kizashi AWD since they share the same AWD computer system that can lock up all three diffs and Suzuki pairs the Kizashi with Dumlop SP7000 tires next to Legacy's XT Rated treads.
Seriously the Evo for Winter? Can I get some of what your smoking? Could use to loose a few cells...
