The secret weapon that I used to sell cars when I was Internet Manager for a major car dealer was the video walk around. It’s also a great tool to use if selling your vehicle privately. The video walk around is simple to record and effective with buyers. It provides a personal look at your vehicle from a distance, which makes better use of the Internet than most other private sellers out there. Your ad will stand out for a very good reason.
In my experience, once a potential buyer views a video walk around, they virtually always purchase the car when they see it in person. However, the reverse was also true. The video walk around helps buyers eliminate my vehicle from their short list, and that’s a good thing.
“Why,” do you ask, “is it a good thing if someone views a video walk around and decides NOT to buy my car?” Selling a vehicle privately is a lot of work. Once you take pictures, write your ad, and post it online, you need to field questions, set an appointment for the test drive, and answer more questions. All of this takes time and effort.
Yet, too often after investing a few hours in meeting a potential buyer for a test drive, they say, “I know you told me over the phone about the scratch down the side, but I didn’t think it was as bad as it was. Sorry, but this is not the vehicle for me.”
All that work down the drain. You head home to field more calls to set up more appointments for more test drives. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could eliminate the majority of people who eventually decide they don’t want your car? That’s what the video walk around does by offering potential buyers a personal tour of your vehicle. It's important to point out all the flaws, scratches, dents, and dings on the exterior finish and bumpers. Are there wear marks or tears on the seats? Be sure to show those, too. It’s better to find out if these are deal breakers before you invest more time with someone who won’t want your car anyway.
The good news is you can also show the great things about your car that most people do want. Does it have luxurious leather seats? These show up very well on video. Are the bumpers in extraordinarily good condition? Does your car have a moon roof, alloy wheels, GPS/navigation, or a bike rack that cost you a few hundred dollars? With a video walk around you can not only show these to potential buyers, but you can talk about them at the same time. With a video walk around you can highlight the great things about your car, show what is unique and special, and talk about what’s important to you and why you love this vehicle. It adds a whole new dimension to a simple ad posted online.
